Marcel den Hollander
As an industrial designer I have always worked with the conviction that well-designed products can improve the quality of our lives and help us to express who want to be. Sustainability has been a common thread throughout my career for over twenty-five years.
I have seen that time and again even promising ideas for sustainable solutions are not explored - let alone embraced - by business when they are not accompanied by a business rationale. Therefore I have developed a new, multi-disciplinary, design methodology which develops products and business models for the Circular Economy in an integral design.
Within Generous Minds I use this knowledge and experience to, together with our clients, define value propositions that are both economically and ecologically successful.
I am the first industrial designer in the world with a PhD in Circular Product Design (TU Delft, 2018). I work as an independent researcher and designer for companies, research institutes and educational institutions in the Netherlands and abroad.
In addition, I am a licensed trainer for the INNOMAT LCA and EVC course, a European education program intended to teach designers and entrepreneurs how to do sustainable (design) interventions based on the fast-track Life-Cycle Assessment and Eco-Cost Value Ratio methods.
My academic work is anchored in more than twenty-five years of practical experience as an industrial designer. I worked for (internationally) renowned design agencies and clients in the world of fast-moving consumer goods, such as packaging, durable consumer goods such as electronics, (motor) bicycles, (office) furniture and professional products, such as retail interiors and exteriors, museum showcases, means of transport, industrial equipment and logistics systems.
Products that last
I am author of the book "Products That Last - product design for circular business models" that is now being used by various design courses around the world and is used as the basis for the CIRCO program of the Dutch government to develop circular design from to roll to business.
To disseminate the results of my research and to explain my design methodology to students and professionals, I regularly give guest lectures and workshops at educational institutions and companies. In the academic domain I publish research results in scientific journals and present my work at international conferences.
